The language-class voice note

Before you correct pronunciation
The correction can wait until it is wanted
Lee presses play, then watches Morgan instead of listening to the recording. It is the first time Lee has spoken in front of the language class without reading every word. Morgan hears a mispronunciation immediately. The temptation to help is real, but the first useful question is what Lee wants from this moment.
“That’s from tonight?” Morgan asks. “Yeah. I actually put my hand up this time.” Morgan says, “You were nervous about that. How did it go?” Now the story has room to emerge. Later Morgan can ask, “Do you want me to help with a word, or are we just listening?” Lee can say, “Just listening tonight.” That answer does not reject Morgan. It describes the kind of response that fits this particular share.
Make the book question practical
A Small Curiosity Exchange lets a person consider the response they would enjoy. Lee might write “Let me finish, then ask about the class.” Morgan might write “I can listen to one short clip now; I’m too tired to practice.” Those are workable limits. Neither person has to demonstrate enthusiasm on command, and neither has to become a teacher.
Course fees and time away from shared responsibilities deserve their own conversation. Agree when to have it, especially if a deadline is approaching. Receiving someone’s courage does not mean ignoring financial pressure. The point is to stop an achievement from becoming a budget debate before either person has said what they wanted to share. The original example shows a possible opening, not proof that the next conversation will go smoothly.
