The crooked shelf

A shelf can be more than a shelf
Look at the part they are showing you
Amara brings Devon to the garage to see a small shelf. Devon immediately notices that one corner is uneven. Amara notices Devon noticing it. “I know. It’s my first one,” Amara says, already taking the shelf back. A well-meant fix can arrive before a listener knows which part mattered.
Devon could pause and ask, “Which bit took the longest?” Amara points to the rounded edge. “I kept messing that up. I finally got it.” Devon can look at that detail and respond honestly: “That feels smooth. You spent ages on it.” This is more specific than exaggerated praise and does not require pretending the shelf is perfect.
Separate interest, advice and agreement
There may still be a real concern. If the shelf will carry heavy objects, safety matters. If it is going in a shared room, both people have a say. “I want to hear how you made it. Before we hang it, can we check the bracket?” keeps those two tasks visible. Curiosity is not an obligation to approve a purchase or a change to the home.
The companion page asks what mattered to the partner. Write the answer in their terms: perhaps learning to use a tool, finishing something after work, or making a place for a family photograph. Then check whether your guess fits. If they do not want to discuss it, stop. A page can remind a reader to ask a closer question; it cannot guarantee an interested response or repair a history of contempt. One exchange is an opportunity to practice, not evidence that a longstanding pattern has changed.

The example above is original, not a quotation from the book or a customer result. Use what fits your circumstances and leave what does not. A partner may choose not to participate; the reader can reflect on their own preferences without treating the page as a way to control that choice.
